Joshua & Jenny Duffy
In the Fall of 2010 a friend randomly dropped of a hamster to us. At the time we were not in a position to care for a hamster, but, regardless of our situation, we ended up with Cheeks McGee and our foray into the world of small animals began.
In the Summer of 2011 I (Josh) challenged myself to go vegetarian for one week. It was an impulse decision which had little to do with a well thought out reason. The week passed successfully and I continued in my new-found lifestyle. Jenny and I began questioning where exactly the meat we eat for food comes from, and the practices we keep regarding animals, and these questions led us to documentaries such as Food Inc. and Forks Over Knives, as well as books such as Singer's In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave, Foer's Eating Animals, Linzey's Creatures of the Same God, and Knight's The Cost and Benefits of Animal Experiments.
We became vegan in the Fall of 2011 and have never looked back. Whereas before all this we had simply professed a love for animals, now we sought to practice a love for animals, and this involved this dramatic lifestyle change.
Jenny is currently entering studies in Child Psychology at UPEI, and I am currently a student at UPEI, double majoring in Theology and Philosophy, with a focus on animal theology/ethics. Jenny and I think much of the use and treatment of animals at the hands of human beings is unjustifiable. We have a dream that people would think differently about animals; that they would not be viewed from a mindset of how they can be of use to us, but of what kind of being they actually are and how we can treat them well as such.
We thank you for your visit to this site, and your interest in the rats we pick up with the hopes we can get them into better homes than which they came.
